Tennessee Success Story Farragut High School
Farragut High School · National Honor Society
Farragut High School's National Honor Society chapter has more than 400 members, and co-sponsor Allison Maldonado is not sure she would be coordinating a chapter that size without Helper Helper. She has used it for several years to keep tabs on every member and to put on the chapter's many service opportunities, from concession stands at Admirals games to the projects that put Farragut near the top of an April service challenge.
A chapter of 400 means a lot of sign-ups, and with 400 members, things happen. That is why Maldonado calls the wait list one of the best additions Helper Helper has made. Members sign up for an opportunity in the app, and when a spot opens, the next member in line can take it instead of leaving the chapter a volunteer short. Concession stands are a chapter staple: NHS members work them for the Admirals' sports teams, so the players' parents get to sit in the stands and watch their kids play.
Keeping tabs on 400 members is the other half of the job, and she calls Helper Helper a game changer for it. Every member's hours, sign-ups, and attendance sit in one place, so she can see where each student stands at a glance. The chapter also likes to compete. When Helper Helper ran a service challenge in April, Farragut finished near the top, and the principal sent the results to the other high schools in the area.
How Helper Helper Supports Tennessee Schools

HECVAT-assessed, FERPA-compliant, encrypted in-transit and at-rest, hosted on AWS infrastructure.
This designation benefits both parties: for your school or district, it means you can deploy Helper Helper without the administrative burden of collecting individual parent consent for every student — the same way you onboard other essential technology platforms. For Helper Helper, it means we are held to the same strict data-handling standards as your own employees, giving your community confidence that student records are protected by the full weight of federal privacy law.
The FTC provides guidance confirming that schools may consent on behalf of parents in the educational context under COPPA. Please request to see our Notice of Data Practices for Children Under 13 and our Privacy Policy for further details.
The HECVAT was developed by the higher education community (EDUCAUSE) and is widely used by colleges and universities to assess the IT security, data protection, and privacy practices of third-party software vendors before adoption. While originally designed for higher ed, its comprehensive framework is equally valuable for K–12 schools and districts looking for a rigorous, standardized way to evaluate whether a vendor meets their security and compliance requirements.
AWS operates the most widely adopted and trusted cloud infrastructure in the world, with security practices that meet or exceed the requirements of federal agencies, financial institutions, and healthcare providers. Their data centers are protected by 24/7 on-site security, biometric access controls, redundant power and networking, and continuous monitoring.
AWS is independently audited against the most rigorous standards in the industry — including SOC 1, SOC 2, SOC 3, ISO 27001, FedRAMP, and PCI DSS — and provides industry-leading uptime guarantees backed by a 99.99% service-level agreement. This means your school can count on Helper Helper being available when students and advisors need it.
Administrators can be scoped to specific groups, schools, grade levels, or graduating classes — an NHS advisor sees only their NHS members, a school principal sees only their school, and a district coordinator sees the full district.
Outside community partners receive organization admin roles that let them post their own volunteer opportunities, manage sign-ups, and confirm attendance for events they host, without any visibility into student records, other organizations’ events, or school-internal data.
Helper Helper is fully FERPA-compliant, giving your community confidence that student records are protected by the full weight of federal privacy law. We never sell or share student data.
For Tennessee schools, we sign your district's Student Data Privacy Agreement and comply with FERPA and Tennessee's Student Online Personal Protection Act (T.C.A. § 49-1-708).
Service Requirements in Tennessee
Tennessee has no statewide service hour requirement for graduation, but state law puts a number on the table. Under T.C.A. § 49-6-413, every public high school student is encouraged to volunteer at least ten hours of community service each semester, and a school must recognize a student who does so every semester at graduation, with a certificate, a designation on the diploma, or a ribbon or cord. Tennessee Promise, the state's tuition-free community and technical college scholarship, makes community service a condition of the award: tnAchieves, the partnering organization for most counties, asks for 32 hours over the life of the scholarship and counts hours from August 1 of a student's junior year. Districts, schools, honor societies, and service clubs set hour expectations of their own.
No requirement at your school?
Helper Helper isn't just for required programs. Tennessee schools also use it for National Honor Society chapters, Key Club, and other student groups, and it works the same way for private high schools that run their own service programs.
One Platform for Every Tennessee Service Program
Tennessee schools recognize service in different ways, and many run more than one program at once. Helper Helper handles all of them in one place:
- NHS, Key Club, and student groups: give each group its own team so advisors track only their own members, post opportunities with sign-ups and wait lists, and check students in on site with a QR code or validation key
- Ten hours a semester: set a goal for the hours in T.C.A. § 49-6-413, see who is on pace each semester, and pull a report of the seniors who qualify for a certificate, cord, or diploma designation at graduation
- Tennessee Promise: juniors and seniors carry a verified service transcript with the dates, organizations, and supervisors they need when they submit hours to tnAchieves
- District and school requirements: set a goal for the hours your district requires, see who is on pace in every graduating class, and report across the district, with rosters kept current through ClassLink, Clever, or your SIS
- Records that go with the student: every student leaves with a verified service transcript for college, scholarship, and job applications
