At Brother Martin High School in New Orleans, service changes with every grade: caring for the environment in eighth grade, people who are elderly, sick, or dying in ninth, people with disabilities in tenth, 60 hours of direct service in junior year, and people facing hunger, homelessness, or poverty in senior year. Today the school accepts no paper at all. A student records his service in the app, the service site confirms it “with the click of a button,” and his religion teacher validates that it counts toward the year's requirement. Louisiana Schools Using Helper Helper
Service Requirements in Louisiana
Louisiana has no statewide service hour requirement for graduation. What the state offers instead is recognition: under state law (R.S. 17:264) and Bulletin 741, school systems may award a Community Service Diploma Endorsement to students who complete 80 hours of documented community service between ninth and twelfth grade. The hours cannot count toward coursework or graded work, cannot involve political activity, and are documented by the local school system. Everything else is decided locally. Many Catholic and independent schools ask for service in every grade, and honor societies and service clubs set hour expectations of their own.
