Bishop DuBourg High School in St. Louis sums up its mission in six words: "Faith in Christ… Service to Others." Service is required of every DuBourg student, but not as a single number. The hours each student owes depend on their graduation year, so the school runs several requirements at once. For years that meant paper forms, and a Campus Ministry office spending countless hours tracking them in Excel.
Over the past four-plus years DuBourg has gone fully electronic. Registrar and A+ Program Coordinator Jim Campbell sets a separate goal for each graduating class and tracks hours by category as well. When a new service opportunity comes in, the whole student body hears about it at once, which Jim describes as "a fluid interaction between the service sites, the school, and the students." Staff pull reports "to help motivate, remind, and inspire our students to do better."
The stories come back too. Students photograph themselves serving, and the school reuses those photos on social media and in alumni newsletters. "What better way to promote our motto," Jim says, "than to show our students actually performing service to others."
